Temptations & Ambitions

A happy New Year to everyone, as I'd realized that this would be my very 1st post in the year 2009. I figured that everyone had made public of their resolution, but I tell you I'd none. Resolution, is in fact, derived from solution with a re-, which meant that we had failed to find a solution to any one of our problems. Thus, I'd emphasized on the strict rule of revolutionizing my effort to keep an update of myself. Otherwise, this wouldn't be my blog, nay?

Apart from the rather busy week 2 weeks ago of project tasks, life has been rather easy going just like it was in Surgery posting. No more meetings to free up our minds of our studies and to subject ourselves to the pressure of performing better than the past posting group who allegedly had a 40% failure rate (out of 60 students) in short cases alone. *Sigh*

And this time round, the settings are no different than Surgery posting with very few bedside teaching and all the time in the world to do as you please. Practice does not come by easily (though more patients than Surgery wards), so we are left walone and no one else. Oh yes, apart from the ever dedicated Prof Shahrir who is more than willing to teach us and spend time with us every Wednesday evening. That is apart from the time he spent with the 5th year medical students on other days. In short, UKMMC has become his 1st home instead of his 2nd. :P This can only depicts how dedicated can he be to train us future doctors.

Other than that, we are left staring at the walls or self-examining our own limbs, perhaps out of boredom.

And UKMMC welcomes patients from all background (as well as species). Our patients do not consist of only humans.

Don't worry, it was just a rare occasion, though I do hear some screams in the tutorial room just as our little friend slipped inside.

A trip into the Cardiac Rehabilitation Ward(CRW) would yield the results of UKMMC's genuine service to the people. Thank you cards are posted up the walls from pateints of all walks of life. And yes, the same CRW was feautered and mentioned in a Thank You letter to the STAR.

On other days, we'll be tagging along with the 5th year seniors who would be offering invaluable experience and guidance to us. I'm just glad that most of the seniors in our posting were really nice and helpful, unlike one of the posting where a few 5th year seniors shoo-ed off a halfway clerking a patient just because they wanted to do a physical examination. And that "few" was 9 of them who did not even greet the patients as they proceed aggresively on to a what seems to be a cooperative patient who would allow them if they'd asked. All they achieved was satisfaction of 9 students and a half-dead patient. And that made it worse for the rest of the students if they had ever want to examine the same patient due to that traumatic experience.

But this would depend on the individual to practise holistic or aggresive medicine. Despite some Personal and Professional Development drilled deep into the 3rd years, I do see a few of them who would still do the same unethical "manouver", losing their 20 years of manners in pursue of " knowledge". All I can pray is that I do not fall into the same category, be it one day, one year, or an eternity.
