Since this is my 200th post, I'm having a sneak preview into my life starting from today. It seems that I'll be writing more on my life for a change perhaps. Thanks for the support everyone!
Life is different from what it used to be. Went to Stargate at Surgery Dept at 7.30am, because many people insisted that it started at 8am. Yet, it still starts at 9am, so it was quiet up there, and I went to the library for a stroll until it was time.
Basically, everything is different. We used to be given our timetable and schedule for classes and lectures. Now we had to arrange ourselves everything from A-Z. Everyone was as blur in the Surgery posting, and we moved like a flock of lemmings up and down until we found our supervisors and mentors. Most groups did not manage to find them today, as most professors and Mr (Title for surgeons) were busy. Everything put on hold would not be replaced unless you get the opportunity to squeeze in some time when your schedule is packed from 8am-5pm, and the doctors would not be there out of these hours. The academic week had been declared to start yesterday (Wesak Day), so what's lost on Monday is lost.
We were divided into 8 groups in the Surgery posting. Each group had a different designated topics related to Surgery give to them on a rotation basis. Mine was on subspecialty week, so the exposure that we were supposed to get for the week would be Pediatric Surgery Clinic and Ward; Ward Burns unit, Clinic and Operating Theatre for Cardiothoracic field; Urology Ward and Operating Theatre; Neurology Ward and Operating theatre; and CME. Since we had multiple lectures on this week, I'll be missing most of the rounds and OT. -.-"
However, my group managed to get into Urology Ward today under the guidance of Professor Zulkifli, an excellent teacher who went through a thorough teaching of history taking and physical examinations. We had managed to cover only the male patients which were mainly complaints of kidney stones and benign prostatic hypertrophy. A simple 2 hour plus ward round which may be rather fruitful in our studies next time.
I had to do history taking on a patient with a typical case of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. I didn't do much, but it was really time to sharpen up my rusty skills. Everything just doesn't seem alright by then. We had to deal with the nurses to take the patients' notes to refer to at times. It's just so different since we spend more time talking and walking than studying.
Tomorrow is going to be a longer day. Gong to observe venipuncture at 6am, CPC lecture at 8am-9.00am, Cardiothoracic clinic at 9.00-10.30 (if possible), History taking and physical exam lecture at 10.30am-12pm, Perioperative lecture at 2.30pm-4pm and a possible sneak into Urology Operating theatre at 4-6pm. A 6am-6pm routine is what is going to kill me in the long run if not the short one. God bless!
